AL accuses BNP of plotting market destabilisation via Indian product boycott

Abu jakir, Dhaka 22 march 2024 : The ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is engaged in a nefarious plot to disrupt the country's market dynamics by advocating for the boycott of Indian products.Quader made these remarks during a press conference held at the Awami League president's political office in Dhanmondi on Friday morning.Quader asserted that the BNP's purported scheme to boycott Indian goods is merely a facade to conceal its ulterior motive of destabilisng relations between Bangladesh and India. He emphasised that despite BNP's efforts, the people of the country would not heed their call for boycott.“The BNP's actions reflect their mental instability and their desperate attempts to sabotage the cordial relations between Bangladesh and India,” stated Quader. He further added that the boycott of Indian products would not adversely affect the bilateral relations between the two countries, as those advocating for the boycott would ultimately face rejection from the people of Bangladesh.Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister condemned the BNP's aggressive rhetoric towards neighboring countries. He criticised the party for its lack of political decorum and cautioned against actions that could jeopardize Bangladesh's regional and global standing.Highlighting the economic significance of India to Bangladesh, the minister pointed out that a substantial portion of Bangladesh's essential goods is sourced from India, thereby emphasising the mutually beneficial nature of their relationship. Moreover, the minister criticized the BNP's internal discord and inconsistent political stance. AL Dismisses BNP's Call for Midterm Elections: Quader Asserts Stability under Sheikh Hasina's Leadership

DHAKA, March 10, 2024 – The General Secretary of the ruling Awami League, Obaidul Quader, has rebuffed claims made by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) regarding the necessity of midterm elections. The BNP has argued that the January 7 general election was not free and fair. Quader addressed these issues during a press conference held at the political office of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in Dhanmondi.Quader, also the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, dismissed the BNP's demand for midterm elections, labeling it as "unrealistic." He questioned the necessity of such elections and deemed the demand by the opposition party as disconnected from reality. In response to questions about talks with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam, who is currently undergoing medical treatment in Singapore, Quader negated any engagement with the BNP leader during their respective medical visits to Mount Elizabeth Hospital. During the press conference on Sunday, Quader criticized the BNP, asserting that the party has strayed far from the ground realities. He emphasized the security of Bangladesh's democracy under Sheikh Hasina's leadership, declaring that the nation's development and prosperity lie in her capable hands. Quader expressed confidence that as long as Sheikh Hasina remains in power, Bangladesh will stay on its current path of progress. Highlighting the contrast between the two parties, Quader stated that Sheikh Hasina understands the language of the people, both in their eyes and hearts, a quality he believes the BNP has failed to grasp. According to him, the BNP has become politically disconnected by failing to comprehend and articulate the language of the people. Touching on the local government elections, Quader informed that 231 elections, including those in Mymensingh and Comilla city corporations, were conducted smoothly with an average voter turnout of 60 percent. He commended the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, and all involved for ensuring fair, undisturbed, and peaceful elections. Quader extended congratulations to the winners. Quader mentioned the BNP's participation in these elections, acknowledging that some BNP leaders participated and achieved victory in certain places. However, he emphasized that these elections held no symbolic significance for the BNP, suggesting an indifferent attitude toward criticizing the government post-election. He further asserted that Bangladesh's election standards align with reality and international norms. His last visit to Singapore for medical purposes was in August of the previous year. Both political figures are expected to undergo medical treatment at the same Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, adding fuel to discussions about the potential for a confidential meeting between the leaders to discuss the country's political situation post the controversial January 7 general elections. However, neither the Awami League nor the BNP has officially commented on any such political discussions. When approached for comments, AL Organising Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi denied knowledge of any political talks between the two leaders. "As far as I know, it is their medical treatment visits; there is no political connection with their latest visit," he stated. These simultaneous visits to the same hospital in the same city by two prominent political figures have sparked further interest in Bangladesh. As both Quader and Fakhrul hold senior positions in their respective parties, political analysts are keen to see whether there will be any discussions or exchange of ideas during their time in Singapore.
