Dhaka, March 13, 2024- In a harrowing incident unfolding in the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, Somalian pirates successfully commandeered the Bangladeshi flag carrier, MV Abdullah, around 1:30 pm on Tuesday. The daring attack has sent shockwaves through maritime circles, prompting swift responses from concerned authorities and the shipping company involved.
According to reports, a distress call was sent by a courageous young crew member of the MV Abdullah to a leader of the Merchant Marine Officers’ Association as the pirates initiated their assault. The message, laden with urgency, conveyed the gravity of the situation: "MV Abdullah. Pirates attack on Somalia, please help us. They have gun. We are attacked."
Upon receiving the distress call, worried merchant marine officers promptly alerted officials of Kabir Group, the ship's owner. The crew's plight further surfaced through social media updates, with crew members like Md Asifur Rahman taking to Facebook to assure their loved ones of their safety amidst the chaos. Asifur Rahman's post at 7:00 pm reiterated the attack and the safety of all crew members, accompanied by a video depicting the chilling sight of pirates boarding the vessel.
Chief Officer Atik Ullah Khan also utilized social media to calm fears, posting at 5:00 pm (Bangladesh time) that the crew members were unharmed, invoking the phrase "Alhamdulillah" (thanks be to God) to express gratitude for their well-being.
Prothom Alo, in pursuit of updates, reached out to Kabir Group’s media adviser Mizanul Islam, who provided insight into the situation. He affirmed that communication with the crew members confirmed their safety, as the pirates confined them to a cabin while assuming control of the ship. However, attempts to establish contact with the pirates remained futile, prompting the company to explore communication channels through local and international media.
Kabir Group officials disclosed that the pirates were steering the vessel toward their stronghold, potentially setting the stage for negotiations. Despite this, no contact has been made with the pirates as of yet, leaving the fate of the ship and its crew in a precarious limbo.
Kabir Group, boasting the largest fleet among Bangladeshi firms, entrusted the operation of its ships to SR Shipping Limited. The incident underscores the ever-present threat posed by piracy in international waters and the need for coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of maritime assets and personnel.
As the situation unfolds, the international community remains on edge, awaiting developments in the high-stakes standoff between the Somalian pirates and the Bangladeshi shipping industry.
