U.S. State Department reiterates support for free and fair flection in Bangladesh
Abu JakirIn a press briefing held yesterday in Washington DC, the U.S. State Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, reaffirmed the United States' commitment to a free and fair election in Bangladesh, scheduled for January 7. The statement comes in response to recent remarks by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, suggesting potential attempts to destabilize Bangladesh if the election results do not meet U.S. expectations."We support a free and fair election in Bangladesh, and I don't have any further comment from that," said Miller, addressing questions from reporters regarding the U.S. stance on the upcoming polls. Zakharova, in a statement on December 15, expressed concerns about the possibility of wider international pressure, including sanctions, being exerted on the Bangladeshi government if the election results are deemed unsatisfactory by Western nations. She drew parallels to the 'Arab Spring,' hinting at potential attempts to destabilize the situation in Bangladesh. This is not the first time international actors have expressed their concerns about the electoral process in Bangladesh. On May 24 earlier this year, the U.S. had announced plans to impose visa restrictions on individuals and their immediate family members "if they are responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh."When questioned about the recent arson attack on a train in Dhaka that claimed the lives of four individuals, including a mother and her three-year-old son, Miller responded, "So, I'm just not familiar with that specific incident and don't have a comment on it." The Biden administration's silence on the tragic incident raises questions about its awareness and stance on recent developments in Bangladesh, especially in light of international concerns over the political stability of the nation. As the January 7 election date approaches, all eyes are on Bangladesh, with international scrutiny and calls for a transparent and credible electoral process intensifying. The statements from both the U.S. State Department and the Russian Foreign Ministry reflect the global interest and potential implications surrounding the outcome of the upcoming polls in Bangladesh.
