The Student Government Association (SGA) extended a warm welcome to the students of Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST) as they inaugurated the new campus. Over two hundred students were greeted by the organization in the cafeteria of the university's fresh campus on Saturday, January 27, 2024. The event featured the presence of WUST Chancellor Engineer Abubokor Hanip and President Dr. Hasan Karaburk. The SGA also marked the occasion by officially welcoming all Winter Quarter inductees with a cake-cutting ceremony.
WUST's Student Government Association serves as an advocacy group dedicated to students' interests and rights and providing necessary assistance. This organization has been active since the inception of the university's new identity and consistently works towards addressing students' grievances. Throughout the year, the SGA arranges a variety of religious, cultural, and sports activities.
Chancellor Engineer Abubokor Hanip encouraged students to become part of the SGA, emphasizing that it offers an opportunity not only to pursue academic excellence but also to explore the diverse cultures of other countries and express oneself. He highlighted the abundance of opportunities available in the United States but stressed that the primary focus should be on earning a degree with merit.
Under the leadership of the SGA, WUST hosts several clubs to foster a positive environment for students. The organization actively organizes cultural, international, historical, and religious events throughout the year.
The president of the university, Dr. Hasan Karaburk, praised the multicultural strength of WUST's student body and underlined the role of the Student Government Association as a platform to unite this diversity. He encouraged all students to join, emphasizing that participation would greatly enhance their learning experiences and create valuable career networks.
SGA takes a proactive stance in addressing issues such as bullying, racism, culture shock, and sexual harassment on campus. Additionally, the organization engages in volunteer work and charitable activities. In February 2023, SGA collected relief funds for a devastating earthquake in Turkey and dispatched them to the affected region.
Chief Financial Officer Farhana Hanip urged students to stay focused on their education, emphasizing that success will come when everyone works together towards a common goal. She pointed out that the United States is a land of opportunity but warned against straying from the primary objective of education. She strongly recommended students consider joining SGA.
Teachers and officials present at the event expressed their appreciation for SGA's efforts to create an effective and enjoyable environment for students to make a positive impact. They encouraged students to become involved in SGA and other clubs to develop their leadership skills and showcase their talents through various activities.
SGA President Seline Yigit emphasized the promotion of extracurricular activities through the establishment of several clubs at the university. She called for everyone's cooperation to strengthen SGA's mission.
SGA Vice President Mustafizur Rahman thanked all the students who attended the event and revealed plans for exciting upcoming activities such as picnics, boat trips, hiking, and sports.
The SGA program at WUST has become synonymous with hosting impressive feasts, and this welcome event was no exception, concluding with a midday meal for all in attendance.
