Dhaka, Bangladesh — Cyclone Remal made a devastating landfall on the coastal regions of Bangladesh on Sunday night, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 lives and widespread destruction. The severe cyclone wreaked havoc across 19 districts, damaging 150,457 houses, with 35,483 of them completely obliterated, according to Md. Mohibur Rahman, the state minister for disaster management and relief.
At a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Monday, Rahman detailed the extensive damage and ongoing recovery efforts.
The fatalities were reported from the districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Barishal, Patuakhali, Bhola, and Chattogram, with the highest toll in Bhola and Barishal, where three individuals perished in each district. Satkhira, Khulna, Chattogram, and Patuakhali each reported one death. The storm's ferocity affected 107 unions and 914 municipalities, leaving many in desperate need of assistance.
In response to the disaster, authorities have opened 9,424 shelters across the coastal districts, providing refuge to over 800,000 people. Additionally, 52,146 domestic animals have been housed in these shelters, ensuring their safety amidst the chaos. Rahman credited the massive preparations and timely evacuation measures for preventing more extensive loss of life and property.
Medical aid is a critical component of the relief efforts. The government has mobilized 1,471 medical teams, with 1,400 currently active in the cyclone-hit areas, offering crucial medical support to the affected populations. To further aid the recovery, the government has allocated Tk 68.5 million for immediate relief. This includes Tk 38.5 million in cash, 5,500 tonnes of rice, 5,000 units of dry food, Tk 15 million for baby food, and another Tk 15 million for animal fodder, distributed across 15 of the most affected districts.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit the cyclone-affected areas soon, as preparations for her visit are underway. The Prime Minister’s Office is coordinating the details, and an official announcement is anticipated.
As Cyclone Remal completed its landfall, it weakened into a land depression by Monday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. However, the aftermath of the storm continues to challenge the nation's resilience.
One of the significant impacts of the cyclone has been the disruption of power supply. The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) reported that power to 22.2 million consumers, out of its total 35.8 million, has been suspended due to the cyclone. These consumers are spread across 61 of the 81 Palli Biduyt Samities (PBSs), indicating the vast scale of the outage.
As Bangladesh begins the arduous task of rebuilding and recovery, the coordinated efforts of the government, local communities, and international aid organizations will be crucial in restoring normalcy to the affected regions. The full extent of Cyclone Remal's impact is still being assessed, but the resilience and solidarity of the Bangladeshi people remain steadfast in the face of adversity.
