DHAKA — The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, and his wife departed Dhaka on Friday for India to spend the Christmas holidays. However, sources indicate that Ambassador Haas may engage in discussions with his Indian counterpart regarding the upcoming January 7 general elections in Bangladesh. The United States has consistently emphasised its desire to witness a free, fair, and inclusive electoral process in the South Asian nation.

Ambassador Peter Haas, accompanied by his wife, left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Vistara UK 184 at 12:30 pm bound for Mumbai, as confirmed by airport officials.

Earlier on Thursday, the U.S. envoy had a closed-door meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary, Masud Bin Momen, at the state guesthouse Padma in Dhaka. While the media was not officially informed of the meeting, foreign ministry officials characterized it as an 'informal meeting.'

According to diplomatic protocol, officials undertaking foreign tours are required to inform the government prior to leaving the country. Ambassador Haas has been a vocal advocate for democracy and human rights in Bangladesh, particularly in light of the approaching national elections scheduled for January 7. The electoral process has been marred by boycotts from major opposition parties, including the prominent Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Opposition parties have been pressing for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, urging the formation of a non-party interim administration to oversee the polls. The U.S. government, through Ambassador Haas, has consistently urged all major parties to engage in dialogue to create a conducive environment for a free, fair, and peaceful election.

As speculation grows regarding potential discussions between Ambassador Haas and his Indian counterpart on the Bangladesh elections, international observers closely watch developments in the region, hoping for a positive outcome that ensures the democratic principles the United States has advocated for in Bangladesh.
