February 26, 2024— In a momentous event, the Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST) located in Virginia has been lauded and commended by the Virginia State Assembly for its exceptional commitment to providing a holistic educational experience.

The university, which uniquely combines career education with contemporary academic instruction, received special recognition on February 26, marking a significant milestone in its journey.

A distinguishing factor of WUST is its ownership and chancellorship held by Eng. Abubokor Hanip, a Bangladeshi-American IT and education entrepreneur. This distinction makes WUST the first university in the United States with such leadership, contributing to the institution's unique identity and global perspective.

WUST's dedication to educational excellence and innovation has been acknowledged previously, with the university receiving commendation last January from both the state parliament and the Senate in Virginia. Notably, 40 senators recognized the institution for its outstanding contributions at that time. The latest recognition comes from the General Assembly, where the House of Delegates, consisting of 100 members, awarded special acknowledgment for WUST's significant role in higher education provision and field innovation.

One of the university's standout features is its focus on providing career education alongside academic instruction. WUST graduates have become highly sought after in the job market, often skipping entry-level positions and securing senior roles immediately upon receiving their degrees. This achievement has earned accolades from the Virginia State Parliament, highlighting the university's positive impact on students' career trajectories.

Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, emphasized WUST's pivotal role in shaping Virginia's education system. He commended the university for its proactive efforts in introducing new programs, showcasing its commitment to industry impact and innovation.

During the recognition event, notable figures— Farhana Hanip, Abubokor Hanip's eldest daughter and a cybersecurity student, Nafisa Naushin, School of Business Director Dr. Mark Robinson, and School of Business and General Education Faculty Professor Salman Elbadri were present, adding to the significance of the occasion.

Established in 2008, WUST has undergone transformative changes under the leadership of Abubokor Hanip since October 2020. As CEO and leader, Hanip has spearheaded rapid expansion, transforming the university into a popular choice among students. Over the past three years, the student population has surged from 300 to an impressive 1700.

Currently, WUST's bachelor's and master's courses in information technology, cybersecurity, and business administration attract students from 121 countries worldwide. The university's commitment to providing quality education and fostering a global learning environment is further exemplified by the recent inauguration of a new campus in Alexandria, Virginia. This development reinforces WUST's position as a leader in higher education and a hub for innovative learning experiences on both a national and international scale.
